Reactive Oxygen Species PDF Print E-mail
ROS or Reactive Oxygen Species *. The ROS-NO phenomenon is a system of potential damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) – also known as free radicles. These may be taken in the diet e.g. by eating trans fats or else breathing in fat-polluted air (factory chimneys, power stations and vehicle exhausts). Nitric oxide (NO) is a naturally occurring reactive oxygen-nitrogen pairing that is produced by your own cells – especially white blood cells. In this form it can detoxify the body by killing bacteria and other types of microbes that cause infection. Once the NO• is formed and does its job, some might be left over. These excess ROS-NO• can cause damage to your cell walls, just like they did to the bacteria. You don't need this to happen so to avert this, that body has developed a counter-balancing antioxidant system. So, the body's normal antioxidant system "quenches" the excess production of these and other free radicles, such as trans fats and other ROS. The antioxidant potential of green tea helps in this process in keeping the body free of excess ROS.
